Collector’s Notes
The “Hidden Crown” Design: The definitive trait of Ref. 168.004 is its thin, flat bezel paired with a recessed or “hidden” crown. The crown sits almost completely flush within a cutout in the case profile. This design highlights the watch’s perfectly circular geometry and protects the crown from impacts. However, it can make manual winding and setting the date by hand a bit tricky due to the limited grip area.
Increased Wrist Presence: Despite measuring 35.5mm, the 168.004 often feels and wears slightly larger than other vintage dress pieces of its era. The very thin bezel gives maximum real estate to the dial, while the integrated, stepped lugs add robust structural presence on the wrist.
Dial Variations: While the reference is found with multiple dial variants (including flat and linen dials), finding an original Pie-Pan dial variant like this represents the pinnacle of mid-century Omega design.
The Legendary Caliber 561: The 500-series calibers are widely regarded by watchmakers as some of the finest mass-produced automatic movements ever made. The copper-colored Cal. 561 is celebrated for its longevity, ease of service, and ability to hold exceptional chronometer-grade accuracy decades after production.
